Announcing Microsoft Operations Framework 4.0!

Microsoft Operations Framework 4.0—Simplifying IT Service Management
We are thrilled to announce the release of Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) 4.0.
MOF 4.0 applies service management concepts to the tasks and challenges IT professionals face every day. The guidance it provides puts IT pros in the spotlight—it speaks to their needs and provides them with job aids to help them make sound decisions. MOF 4.0 features guidance specifically written to help CIOs, IT directors, IT managers, and IT professionals at all levels plan, deliver, operate, and manage IT services across the lifecycle.
In version 4.0, MOF introduces a new structure that puts emphasis on outcomes, results, and roles in a format that’s easy to reference. Because every group, team, and company is unique, the service management functions (SMFs) in MOF 4.0 are anchored by questions that support the decision-making process within an organization. This new, streamlined approach makes it possible to use either the entire framework or just one component of the framework to solve a particular problem.
The practical guidance in MOF 4.0 features processes; governance, risk, and compliance activities; management reviews; and best practices from Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF). Finally, to ensure industry alignment, MOF 4.0 supports the best practices found in frameworks such as ITIL, CoBIT, and ISO 20000.
The new release of MOF offers concise, practical guidance across the IT lifecycle, but it doesn’t stop there. Another very important element of version 4.0 is our online community: a platform where IT professionals can contribute their own timely, relevant recommendations for achieving reliable, cost-effective IT services…and benefit from the contributions of their peers.
What You Should Do Next
Download MOF 4.0 now at www.microsoft.com/MOF, then join the online MOF community. See what you can contribute—and what you can gain—by participating in forums and blogs, providing feedback, and supporting other IT professionals.

Announcing Sonar Lite - Performance Measurement for SharePoint

Announcing Sonar Lite - Performance Measurement for SharePoint

From the author of the tool:

One of the most frustrating aspects of SharePoint administration and development is the inability to get any sort of granular performance metrics for page objects (especially web parts).  SharePoint can be a finicky beast - configure a setting wrong here, make the wrong object model call there, and performance slows to a crawl.  Identifying which objects on a page are causing performance bottlenecks is more art than science, requiring a great deal of back and forth between development and IT, resulting in a tremendous amount of finger-pointing and lost productivity.

To meet this need we have created the Sonar suite of performance measurement tools for SharePoint.  Sonar bridges the gap between the utilization reporting capabilities of MOSS 2007 and third-party analytic solutions by providing real-time component-level performance information for pages within a MOSS or WSS site collection.  By delivering performance statistics at the object level, Sonar allows developers, administrators and IT support personnel to isolate and identify the root cause of page performance bottlenecks with high degree of certainty.  By analyzing performance information at the server – before it is rendered to the client – Sonar can pinpoint trouble areas independent of the browser type, network connection or regional location of the user.

Sonar Lite, the first product in the Sonar suite of performance measurement tools for SharePoint, can be downloaded and installed in minutes on any MOSS 2007 or WSS v3 server.  It employs a lightweight architecture that analyzes page performance in real-time without impacting overall application performance or placing undue stress on the server.  Best of all, it leverages the SharePoint solution (.wsp) and feature framework to make deployment, installation and removal simple and hassle-free.

We created Sonar to serve our own needs as well as those of our customers and partners.  As developers, we need tools that can help us insure that the code we write is as performant as possible.  Our customers want assurances that their systems are operating under optimal parameters and that when performance issues do arise they can be effectively isolated and dealt with swiftly.

We're betting that you feel the same way and will want to give Sonar Lite a try, so we're offering it for a limited time as a free download.  No trial period.  No expiration date.  Just free software to help insure that your SharePoint farm is performing up to its potential.  Just don't call us if you misconfigure your app pools or try to host 10,000 sites on a single box using SQL express - we're developers not miracle workers!

Get all the Sonar information here (downloads, demos, screen shots, user manual, marketing stuff, and even a cool Silverlight intro - how 'bout that?).  Let us know what you think of Sonar Lite.  Post a comment, email us, or share your thoughts in the Sonar forums.  Good, bad or indifferent, we want to hear it (really, we do).

Great tool: Autoruns

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.
Autoruns' Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in on third-party auto-starting images that have been added to your system and it has support for looking at the auto-starting images configured for other accounts configured on a system. Also included in the download package is a command-line equivalent that can output in CSV format, Autorunsc.
You'll probably be surprised at how many executables are launched automatically!
Autoruns works on all versions of Windows including 64-bit versions.

Serge Lenbet moving into ATS role for Commerical Sector Dubai

After working as a Consultant and TSP on a variety of products (lately with strong focus on MOSS) I would like to announce to you that I have decided to shift my career into another role at Microsoft which is the account technology specialist role starting 1st of January 2008. My colleague Bassem Aamer (who is based in Kuwait will continue and we are in the progress of recruiting for a suitable TSP SharePoint based in Dubai). My new role in its nature is to work with specific CAS accounts, understand their requirements, complete their IO profiling and map them to products/solutions and orchestrating various resources along the selling cycle till we reach a win/deployment. Therefore the blog articles here will likely switch to more general subjects in the future, too.
